In addition, not only is it the sole mandatory piece of information that you need to provide within the scope segment of the standard, but also the most important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Laut <a href=\"https:\/\/bestpractice.biz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Best Practice Biz<\/a>, \u2018The concept behind the scope statement is to let you understand the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Laws and regulations you must adhere to<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interfaces and dependencies you have with other models<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Internal and external issues relevant for your ISMS information security<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Processes and security controls needed to operate your business\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ISO 27001 scope statement defines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What your business does.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What important information is covered by the ISMS.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why security is important for your organisation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which parts of your business are certified.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s what appears on your ISO 27001 certificate for all the world (well, not <em>all<\/em> the world, but you know what we mean) to see.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, it\u2019s what your customers care about when it comes to security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s the scope of ISO 27001?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ISO 27001 scope itself defines everything &#8211; from data to products, processes to services, systems to geographies &#8211; that is protected by your ISMS. It also defines everything that isn\u2019t protected.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to correctly compile your organisation\u2019s scope, you must determine the boundaries and applicability of the ISMS.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means examining any external and internal issues that you will find defined in clause 4.1 of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/standard\/82875.html\">the ISO 27001 standard<\/a>, understanding the needs and expectations of interested parties (4.2), and determining the links between activities performed by your organisation and external organisations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examining and understanding which parts of the business are involved in creating, accessing or processing your valuable information assets, and carrying out a risk assessment will keep you on track when defining the scope of your ISMS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is defining your ISO 27001 scope so important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whatever goes into your scope must be covered by your ISMS; whatever is outside the scope doesn\u2019t have to be covered by your ISMS. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, if you leave something out of the scope that should have been in the scope, you could end up with some unwanted security issues, unprotected data and unsatisfied clients and\/or stakeholders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you put something in the scope that needn\u2019t be there, you\u2019re just making more work for your team and potentially spending money you don\u2019t really need to. Also, too broad a scope isn\u2019t agile in terms of allowing for changes in technologies and features.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you write a scope statement for ISO 27001?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your scope statement is a summary of your scope and should make it clear to your customers that what they are purchasing from you, whether it\u2019s a product or a service, is covered by your ISMS.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, when writing your scope statement, answer the following questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What does my organisation do?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which products or services are in scope?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which information do we need to protect?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What processes are associated with that information?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are there any exclusions (places, processes etc) that can be left out of the scope?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s apply these questions to a fictional company to see how they work to shape a scope statement. We\u2019ll call the company FindMyPet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What does my organisation do?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FindMyPet reunites pets and owners\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li>Which products or services are in scope?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026 using scanner technology and microchips\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\">\n<li>Which information do we need to protect?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026that store customers\u2019 personal data (name, physical address, phone number)\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\">\n<li>What processes are associated with that information?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026that is also stored in a central database located at our offices in Dogtown\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"5\">\n<li>Are there any exclusions (places, processes etc) that can be left out of the scope?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026which is not accessible to anyone other than our IT department.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All together now:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>FindMyPet reunites pets and owners using scanner technology and microchips that store customers\u2019 personal data (name, physical address, phone number) that is stored in a central database located at our offices in Dogtown which is not accessible to anyone other than our IT department.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common mistakes to look out for when creating your scope statement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As with anything ISO related, you should always be aware of <a href=\"https:\/\/compleye.io\/de\/artikel\/iso-27001-certification-common-pitfalls\/\">potential pitfalls<\/a>. Although the scope statement is a simple and short piece of work, it should be precise and clear excluding extraneous items and including anything that you deem worthy of ISMS protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not understanding what information your organisation stores, processes and manages might lead to you leaving a vital element out of your statement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make sure that you know everything there is to know about the data that your company handles, you may want to look into attending <a href=\"https:\/\/compleye.io\/de\/sessions\/\">professional compliance sessions.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything that falls outside the defined scope is deemed to be unsafe, so leaving out anything that your customer might not want to purchase because it hasn\u2019t been certified is not a great plan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your scope statement should be neither too ambitious nor too ambiguous. Don\u2019t aim too high and include every department, every person and every last piece of data. We can assume, therefore, that their ISMS covers everything related to all their activities and products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.
